don’t think I ever really had the chance to say a proper goodbye

“I don’t think I ever really had the chance to say a proper goodbye, but we came close. Freddie was very much at peace near the end, fully aware that he didn’t have much time left. We spent a lot of time with him in those last days, and it wasn’t about saying goodbye — it was simply about being there and sharing those moments with him.

I remember one day in particular. We were talking about his garden. He was lying in bed, and from where he was, he couldn’t see it clearly anymore. Freddie loved his plants, so we talked about them for a while.

Anita and I had some quiet, precious time with him too. At one point he said, “Guys, you don’t have to talk to me. Just being here is what matters, and I’m enjoying that. You don’t need to entertain me.” In his own way, he was showing acceptance — incredible acceptance — of what was happening.

So no, we never said the word “goodbye,” but we did reach a beautiful, peaceful place together.”
